The Short Answer

A standard replacement window takes 45 to 90 minutes from removal to finished trim. A typical Canmore home with 10 to 15 windows is done in two to three days.

That assumes a two person crew, standard sizes, and openings that are structurally sound. Add time for oversized units, awkward access, or rot discovered once the old frame comes out.

What Happens During Those 90 Minutes

Removal

The crew masks the floor, removes interior trim, and cuts the old unit free. On older Bow Valley homes this is where surprises appear, such as failed sealant or water damage in the sill.

Fitting and Levelling

The new window is dry fit, shimmed, and checked for square. This is the step that decides whether the sash operates smoothly in ten years, so it should not be rushed.

Sealing and Finishing

Low expansion foam goes in the gap, then flashing tape, exterior caulking, and interior trim. Proper air sealing is what makes a new unit actually perform, which matters more here than in most of Alberta.

What Adds Time

• Size and weight. Large picture units and mountain view walls often need three or four people and mechanical lifts.
• Second and third storey access. Scaffolding or a lift adds setup time before any window comes out.
• Rot or structural repair. A damaged sill can add two to four hours to a single opening.
• Stucco and stone exteriors. Cutting back and patching takes longer than vinyl siding.
• Custom shapes. Arched, trapezoid, and angled units common in mountain architecture need careful fitting.

If you are only dealing with a failed seal or a broken crank, a targeted repair visit is usually a one hour job and does not require a full replacement schedule.

Lead Time Versus Install Time

Installation is the short part. The wait for manufacturing is what stretches the calendar.

Custom sizes and specialty glazing sit at the longer end. Book early if you want the job done before a specific season.

How Disruptive Is It, Really?

Each opening is exposed for roughly 20 to 40 minutes. You will hear reciprocating saws, hammers, and a vacuum for most of the working day.

You can stay home for the whole project. Most people work from another room, move pets to a closed space, and clear a metre of space in front of each window before the crew arrives.

Expect some dust despite plastic sheeting, especially on stucco or plaster interiors. Curtains, blinds, and anything on the sill should come down the night before.

Seasonal Timing in the Bow Valley

Windows can be installed year round in Canmore, including in January. Crews work one opening at a time and seal as they go, so the house never loses much heat.

That said, timing does change the experience:

• May through September. Fastest work, best caulking cure conditions, and the busiest booking calendar in Canmore, Banff, and Cochrane.
• October and November. Good availability and mild enough for exterior sealants. A strong window for getting ahead of winter.
• December through March. Fully workable, but expect slightly longer days per window and cold weather sealants. Chinook swings and wind off the valley can pause exterior work.
• April. Freeze and thaw cycles make exterior patching less predictable.

Doors and Larger Projects
